In the local Malayalam language, Ashtamudi translates directly to eight branch a literal description of the lake’s unique topography.

Ashtamudi is the second-largest wetland ecosystem in Kerala. It serves as the grand convergence zone where the freshwater Kallada River meets the salty Arabian Sea at the Neendakara breach. This constant tidal mixing creates a highly specific, nutrient-rich brackish environment that sustains vast mangrove forests.

Gateway to the Ancient Silk Route

The ancient city of Kollam sitting on the shores of Ashtamudi, was one of the most important ports on the maritime Silk Route.

The famous 14th-century Moroccan traveler Ibn Battuta described Kollam as one of the most magnificent ports in all of Asia, boasting a wealthy population of foreign merchants living under the protection of the local rulers.

Later, during the Age of Discovery, the Portuguese, Dutch, and British fiercely contested control of this specific waterway, constructing fortified trading posts along the lake's edge to monopolize the wealth flowing from the inland spice hills straight into the heart of Ashtamudi.
